The Mervue United player who was man-of-the-match in the Mayo county final

Tom King lined out for Mervue United on Friday night and Castlebar Mitchels yesterday.

YESTERDAY’S MAYO COUNTY final man-of-the-match award went to an unlikely figure.

Castlebar Mitchels forward Tom King was a late inclusion in their starting line-up but proceeded to impress as he shot four points in his team’s 1-11 to 0-8 victory over Breaffy.

King’s showing saw him land the individual accolade after the game as Castlebar Mitchels, managed by former Mayo player Pat Holmes, won their first title in 20 years.

It was a win to savour for King after he had suffered sporting disappointment elsewhere this weekend.

On Friday night he lined out in defence for Mervue United in the second leg of their First Division Promotion playoff against Longford Town.

The Galway club held a 1-0 lead going into the second leg but they lost 3-2 after extra-time on Friday night and ended up losing 3-0 on penalties as Longford progressed.

King has been in excellent form for Mervue United this season and earlier this month was named on the 2013 PFAI First Division Team of the Year.

An underage player with Mayo club Castlebar Celtic, King moved to England to play for Plymouth Argyle in 2006 before returning home two years later. He then had spells with Sligo Rovers, Longford Town and Galway United before joining Mervue United in 2011.

King’s focus will now be on Gaelic football after the end of the League of Ireland season with Castlebar Mitchels moving onto the Connacht championship where they face Galway’s Corofin at the semi-final stage.
