WALES FLY-HALF Rhys Priestland is a serious doubt for his side’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against France on Saturday.

The 24-year-old performed impressively as Wales beat Ireland last weekend and represents one of a number of Welsh youngsters that have gained worldwide renown during this tournament.

However Priestland, who only made his international debut last February, is suffering from a shoulder injury he picked up in the Ireland game, which has rendered him doubtful to play on Saturday.

One person who would be disappointed to see Priestland miss out is All Blacks legend Colin Meads, who in addition to predicting a Wales-New Zealand final, singled out Priestland and teammate George North for praise.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said:

“The young 10 [Priestland] looks pretty neat, and that fella North is going to be one hell of a player. He’s tearing the world apart.”

If Priestland fails to recover in time, Warren Gatland would likely choose either Stephen Jones or James Hook as his replacement.

And speaking ahead of the game,  Hook told reporters:

“If I am called upon, I would be chuffed. It was really difficult watching on Saturday, but you get caught in the emotion on the bench and get behind the boys.”

Meanwhile, France have announced their starting line-up for the game, naming the same side that beat England last weekend.
