Big names among 17 candidates picked to do UEFA Pro Licence course

The FAI has confirmed a shortlist of those who will attend the fourth course of its kind in this country.

THE FAI HAS announced that 17 coaches will take part in the upcoming UEFA Pro Licence course later this year.

Among the successful candidates are a number of big names in Irish football including Airtricity League manager Owen Heary (Bohemians), John Caulfield (Cork City) and Peter Hutton (assistant to Roddy Collins at Derry City).

Ireland women’s manager Sue Ronan and Eileen Gleeson of WNL side Peamount United will also be the first female representatives on the course.

At the end of 2013, there were 49 Pro Licence holders in Ireland and this will be the fourth time the course is held in the country as it can only take place every two years due to UEFA regulations.

“Having received an abundance of applications for the next edition of our Pro Diploma course, we then entered a very robust selection process, and are delighted with the final shortlist of candidates,” FAI coach education manager Greig Paterson said.

The FAI have already produced 49 UEFA Pro Diploma holders through our courses, and this next course will see a further 17 participants hone and develop their skills in several different disciplines, from the coaching field, to the boardroom, from psychology to sports science.

“This year we will also welcome our first ever female representatives on the UEFA Pro Diploma course, and the course will be led by our High Performance Director Ruud Dokter, and U21 Manager Noel King.”

The 17 confirmed candidates are: Stuart Ashton, John Caulfield, Dave Connell, Jason Donohue, Eileen Gleeson, Tommy Griffin, Niall Harrison, Owen Heary, Ollie Horgan, Robbie Horgan, Peter Hutton, Colin O’Brien, Don O’Riordan, Tom Mohan, Mick Neville, Sue Ronan, Leo Tierney.
