The snub goes on: No Premier League players included in latest Team of the Year

5.3m votes were counted and the likes of Rooney, Hart and Drogba were nowhere to be seen.

THE IGNOMINY CONTINUES for the Premier League’s playing contingent and the people of Europe are [mostly] to blame.

A poll conducted by UEFA.com to find the best team of 2012 has come back with 5.3 million votes, from half a million users, and a Best XI containing eight La Liga players.

Real Madrid and Barcelona split the honours with four players apiece chosen in the Uefa Team of 2012.

Leo Messi was voted in 65% of supporter’s ‘teams of the year’. It is the seventh time he has been included in the Uefa best-of.

Cristiano Ronaldo [52%] and Iker Casillas [45%] are also included for what marks their sixth inclusion in recent years.

Three newcomers are included in the team including Mesut Özil [44%], Andrea Pirlo [46%] and PSG defender Thiago Silva, who just about made the grade with 38%.

The player that appeared in most teams of the online voters was  Andrés Iniesta with 73%.

According to football writer Henry Winter, the highest placed Premier League player was Ashley Cole, who came in 19th on the list with approximately 115,000 votes.

The only Premier League player included last season was Gareth Bale.
