AFTER SIX DECADES of hurt, you’ll forgive Mayo fans for turning to God this week.
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny admits he’ll ask the Pope for some help ahead of the All-Ireland football final when he travels to Rome this weekend.
The Fine Gael leader’s native Mayo face Donegal in the championship decider at Croke Park on Sunday.
“It’s an exciting week for me,” he said at the offices of online payments company Realex earlier today. “I have to go and meet the Pope on Saturday and I’m going to tell him that we need some divine intervention, we have waited long enough. 61 years is too long.
“While I am a half a Donegal man, I know they will forgive me. Whether it be the hills of Donegal or the plains of Mayo, something is going to erupt next weekend and I hope that whatever happens, it’s a cracker of a game and we get the right result.”
Judging by the prediction he scribbled on one of the company’s white boards, however, it looks like the Taoiseach thinks we’ll have a draw — just like the hurling showpiece .
