CHASING LARISA LATYNINA’S record haul of 18 Olympic medals, Michael Phelps was on the brink of history in last night’s 200m butterfly final so you can forgive his friends and family for getting a little excited.

The US swimmer led the field the whole way around until a thrilling finish when South Africa’s Chad le Clos reeled him in over the final metres. Both stretched for the wall at the exact same moment and…

Le Clos. The South African edged it by a finger tip, winning by 0.05 seconds and relegating Phelps to silver.

The only problem was that nobody told Deborah Phelps, who thought that her baby boy had won his 15th Olympic gold.

Fortunately, the NBC cameras caught it all because the moment of realisation is quite special.
