Wayne Rooney's father arrested in 'match-fixing' investigation

Manchester United striker’s dad is one of nine men arrested in Liverpool and Glasgow as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity, according to reports.

THE FATHER OF Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, has been arrested today as part of an investigation into an alleged betting scam in Scottish football.

The Mirror reports that Wayne Snr was arrested at his home in Liverpool while the England forward’s uncle, Richie, is also said to be in custody.

There has been nine arrests in total.

Earlier today, Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings was arrested at his home by Merseyside Police, the Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed.

Regan credited the information to the Gambling Commission, saying it follows “extensive enquiries” into alleged betting irregularities at an SPL tie between Motherwell and Hearts in December last year.

“While the investigation involves several other individuals outwith Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match,” he said.

“Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course. The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage.”

Jennings moved from Tranmere to Motherwell two years ago.

Wayne Rooney Jr is currently on England duty in Montenegro ahead of their Euro2012 qualifier. Andre Gregory has confirmed the striker won’t be making any comment:
