Model County

9 of Wexford's best sporting moments in 2013

It wasn’t exactly 1996 but here’s how things went in the Model County this year.

1. Gordon D’Arcy made a mockery of Movember

The Leinster man went his own way to rock this simply superb beard:

2. And then the Ferns man had a stormer against the All Blacks

5. The county’s U21 hurlers beat Kilkenny in a thriller at Wexford Park

The hosts came out on the good side of an incredible 1-21 to 0-21 extra-time shoot-out against the Cats in July.

6. Traditional hurling club St Martin’s winning the Wexford SFC

They blitzed Fethard 1-8 to 0-5 in Cotober to claim an historic first senior football title.

7. Oulart keeper pulls off photo-bomb of the year

They may have again missed out on provincial honours after the shock defeat to Mount Leinster Rangers but they’re dominant in the county (claiming a famous five on the trot) and Ben O’Connor did this.

8. Mick Wallace wore a Torino jersey in the Dail

Which brightened up one October Wednesday for some.

9. Jim Bolger trained Dawn Approach to 2000 Guineas and St James’ Palace stakes wins.
