IRELAND MANAGER GIOVANNI Trapattoni has responded to controversial comments about his side made by ex-Ireland international Roy Keane in the wake of their 4-0 loss to Spain.

Speaking on ITV after the match last night, Keane criticised Trapattoni’s side, saying the players “needed to change their mentality” in order to be more successful at future tournaments.

Trapattoni’s response to the comments being put to him was the only time he got angry in the entire post-mortem press conference.

“Roy Keane has been a very great player. He knows when Ireland was a strong team because his generation was very high [quality]. It’s not my opinion to be critical but what did he do after he played?

“He was a great player. Now, he’s a coach, he should focus on getting results.”
