TYRONE’S KRIS MEEKE held his own in the snow on the first full day at the WRC Rally of Sweden.
Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle from Killarney are in 10th place in their Citreon DS3, 46.6 seconds behind world champion Sebastien Ogier who is bidding for a repeat of his win here 12 months ago.
Ogier leads a Volkswagen 1-2-3 ahead of Andreas Mikkelsen (+5.8 seconds) and Jari-Matti Latvala (+6.4 seconds).
Meeke started the week third in the drivers’ standings following a strong start to the season in Monte Carlo.
But after a crash during Wednesday’s shakedown, the emphasis was on avoiding any more mistakes in his first full snow rally.
His best performance came with a fourth-place finish on the day’s final stage.
“I can’t expect much more,” he said afterwards.
“On this rally you have to take your time. If you try to run before you walk you’ll fall on your face.”
Waterford’s Craig Breen is in 14th overnight.
