After the guts of two years out with injury, this meant everything to Del Potro

The former US Open champion has been plagued by a wrist problem and is delighted to finally have a clean bill of health.

A BUOYANT JUAN Martin Del Potro is looking to the future with optimism after reaching the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open on his return from a lengthy injury lay-off.

Prior to this week’s ATP 250 event in Florida, Del Potro had spent the best part of two years on the sidelines due to problems with his left wrist.

After undergoing surgery in March 2014, the former US Open champion briefly returned to action the following year, but featured in just two tournaments before opting to go under the knife again.

However, he enjoyed a successful comeback this week – claiming three victories in straight sets prior to a 7-5 7-5 loss at the hands of Sam Querrey in the last four on Saturday.

Reacting to his defeat against Querrey, Del Potro said: ”I always try to win, that’s for sure, But this week I won more than a tournament. I’m so glad to play tennis again.”

The Argentinian, who reached a high of fourth in the world rankings prior to his injury misery but began this week outside the top 1,000, is now set to play the opening Masters 1000 event of 2016, which takes place at Indian Wells next month.

“I can confirm I will play in Indian Wells, which is good news for me,” he added.

“I have a few weeks to rest and to train. I will be there to play another tournament and I’m looking forward to the future.

“I can start to make a plan to play more tournaments. I have many positive things to take from this.”
