AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Derry v Tyrone, Ulster SFC quarter-final

These old rivals met for the fifth time this season as they began the chase for provincial honours.

Welcome to live coverage of the Ulster SFC quarter-final between Derry and Tyrone at Celtic Park.

After a relatively low-key start to the championship, nothing better than a heated Ulster clash to set the juices pumping. ‘Heated’ might be an understatement.

If Tyrone and Derry are not sick of the sight of each other by now, they surely will be by full-time today. A fifth meeting of 2016 sees Tyrone as warm favourites to complete a whitewash.

Their four previous games have produced five red cards, 33 yellows and four black cards. Derry boss Damian Barton served an eight week ban for getting involved in a melee in the McKenna Cup final loss to Tyrone. Two Derry players ended up in hospital after the same game.

Mickey Harte is building his best side since the late 2010s, but there has been quite a lot of hype around this team. The reality is they haven’t contested an Ulster final since their last win in 2010 and they spent the spring in Division 2. And they were only fourth-highest scorers in the second tier.

Derry had a fairly mixed league campaign. They’ll need to slow the pace of this game down to cause on upset.  How they handle the direct running of Tiernan McCann, Mark Bradley and Peter Harte will go a long way to determining the outcome.

Throw-in is at 2pm.

We’re almost set to go here. Who’ll win it?

And we’re underway! Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Plenty of short hand-passing from Derry in the early stages as Tyrone set up their defensive blanket.

Tyrone 0-0 Derry 0-1

3 mins – Derry are up and running through a free from James Kielt. They’ve started well and they’ve slowed the game down to a manageable pace.

The first sign of trouble in the game. Derry wingback Gareth McKinless might consider himself lucky to stay on the field as a melee unfolds on the sideline.

Tyrone 1-1 Derry 0-1

7 mins – Richie Donnelly playeds a peach of a ball inside to Ronan O’Neill who’s quick-thinking dummy left him with an open goal. O’Neill made no mistake from close-range.

Sean Cavanagh capped it off with a point moments later.

Tyrone 1-3 Derry 0-2

11 mins - Cathal McShane and Ronan O’Neill point either side of one in response from Daniel Heavron.

Tyrone 1-3 Derry 0-4

14 mins – The quality of football is very impressive here. Kielt pops over a lovely long-range effort.

Tyrone 1-4 Derry 0-5

15 mins – Another good free by Kielt cuts the gap. At the far end Ronan O’Neill converts a free he won himself. 1-2 for him after the first quarter.

Darren McCurry is limbering up on the sideline as Mark Bradley comes off with injury.

The rain begins to pour in Celtic Park, making the conditions very difficult for both sides.

Tyrone 2-4 Derry 0-5

19 mins – A second goal for Ronan O’Neill! He slotted home the rebound after a good save by Thomas Mallon. O’Neill’s tally is now 2-2. That direct ball into the Derry full-back line is causing havoc.

Tyrone 2-5 Derry 0-5

28 mins - Sean Cavanagh wins a free after another quick Tyrone transition from defence to attack. O’Neill fails to apply the finish from the placed ball.

From the following play, Tyrone run at Derry down the right and Mattie Donnelly curls over.

Derry haven’t scored in 11 minutes.

Tyrone 2-7 Derry 0-5

30 mins – McAliskey confidently adds on to Tyrone’s lead from a free. Then he repeats the trick from play 30 seconds later. Tyrone are dominating the kickouts.

Tyrone 2-8 Derry 0-5

31 mins – Darren McCurry makes it a nine point lead. Tyrone could be out of sight by half-time. Derry have capitulated.

34 mins – Ryan Bell comes in for Emmett McGuckin as Derry try to stop the rot. He’ll hope to give them more of a presence in their full-forward line.

Tyrone 2-8 Derry 0-6

35+1 mins – Derry engineer a score from Karl McKaigue in a packed defence.

Tyrone 3-8 Derry 0-6

35+2 mins – GOAL for Peter Harte! Another wonderful attack results in Harte delivering the third three-pointer of the afternoon. Tyrone are in complete control here.

Half-time: Tyrone 3-8 Derry 0-6

Tyrone look like a side primed for bigger days ahead. Their attack is clean, crisp and hungry for goals. Mickey Harte’s men have showed a ruthless streak that suggests they’ll have a real say in the destination of Sam Maguire this winter.

Derry, on the other hand, are a mess out there. They’ve been ripped to shreds in the opening half. Doesn’t bode well for their season.

Derry are poorly set-up tactically. They’re moving up to 14 players at times into the Tyrone half, which is playing into their opponents hands.

Matthew Donnelly

Derry put a goal chance just wide after a nice build-up. They needed a goal there.

Tyrone 3-9 Derry 0-6

38 mins – McCurry stretches the lead at the far end. Derry look like they’ll adopt a route-one mode of attack for this second half. Tyrone are far too street wise for that approach to trouble them.

Tyrone 3-9 Derry 0-7

40 mins – Kielt pops over a free for Derry.

Tyrone 3-10 Derry 0-7

42 mins – That was a marvelous score from Richie Donnelly. Tyrone suffocated a Derry attack and broke away at pace. Peter Harte looked like he had a goal chance but he recovered well from a hard tackle to supply Donnelly with the pass.

Padraig McNulty comes in for Richie Donnelly.

Tyrone 3-10 Derry 0-10

50 mins – Tyrone’s lead is back down to single digits. Ryan Bell and Eoghan Brown with a score apiece.

Derry’s Ciaran McFaul is shown a black card and having already been shown a yellow, he is sent off!

Tyrone 3-10 Derry 0-11

56 mins - Daniel Heavron kicks a nice long range point for Derry. That’s one way to beat the blanket defence. Tyrone have only scored two points in the second-half. They did take their foot off the gas at stages during the league too.

You sense that tempers might boil over before the end of the game. Derry are frustrated at Tyrone, who are successfully trying to slow the game down.

Tyrone 3-11 Derry 0-11

60 mins – Padraig McNulty scores a point that sums up Tyrone’s play today. He drives at the Derry defence having been slipped a pass from Sean Cavanagh and takes his score.

Tyrone should have had a fourth goal! McNulty was denied by Thomas Mallon’s good save from close-range.

Red card for Chrissy McKaigue! Frustration got the better of him and he stuck his elbow into Colm Cavanagh’s face.

Tyrone 3-12 Derry 0-12

69 mins – James Kielt’s free leaves the gap at three goals once again.

Tyrone 3-14 Derry 0-12

73 mins – Sean Cavanagh demands the ball and then passes to Jonathan Monroe who points. McCurry tags on a points from the next play.

Full-time: Tyrone 3-14 Derry 0-12

Very impressive start to the championship by Tyrone. They’ve got this system nailed and they’ll go a long distance this year. This team has a huge potential.

Tyrone advance to the Ulster semi-final where they’ll take on the winners of Cavan and Armagh in the last four.

That’s a wrap for our coverage. Thanks for joining us.
