HURRICANES WILL PLAY in the Super Rugby final for the second successive year after Beauden Barrett starred in a 25-9 victory over Chiefs at Westpac Stadium today.

Chris Boyd’s side were beaten by Highlanders in the final last year and face either a rematch against the defending champions or Lions next weekend after a convincing semi-final victory in Wellington.

Fly-half Barrett scored a try and 10 points with the boot, while Willis Halaholo and Victor Vito also went over as Hurricanes secured a first play-off victory against another New Zealand side in seven attempts.

Three Damian McKenzie penalties were all Chiefs could muster, as Hurricanes defended resolutely to move just one victory away from claiming a first Super Rugby title.

New Zealand international Barrett had a big hand in the opening try just seven minutes in, chasing his own kick and getting a pass away for Haloholo to dot down.

McKenzie got Chiefs on the board and Dave Rennie’s side piled on the pressure without reward before Barrett slotted over a penalty and added insult to injury by plucking a stray Sam Cane pass to race away and go under the posts.

Another McKenzie penalty on the stroke of half-time reduced the deficit to 15-6, but Hurricanes – without injured captain injured captain Dane Coles – increased their advantage when Vito crashed through a gap from the base of the scrum

The clinical Barrett added the extras and slotted over another penalty either side of another three-pointer from McKenzie as Hurricanes saw the game out in convincing fashion.
