REBEL WITH A CAUSE

Cork's John Egan continues superb form with another goal for Brentford

The Bees were in action against Sheffield Wednesday and picked up a much-needed victory.

IT’S INEVITABLE THAT John Egan will be a regular face in the Republic of Ireland senior setup.

This is his first season in the Championship but he’s been terrific for Brentford ever since joining from Gillingham last summer and tonight he conjured his fourth goal of the season as his employers got the better of promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The game was the 24-year-old’s first start since the 4-0 FA Cup thumping Brentford received at Stamford Bridge – he needed 21 stitches in his ear that day after a collision. After being an ever-present, it was a new experience for him to be on the Bees’ bench.

But, in the three games he was a substitute Brentford leaked ten goals so he returned this evening.

Inevitably, he got on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win – a badly-needed one, too. They had managed just one victory from their last seven games before tonight.

It moves Brentford up to 14th in the table while the Owls miss out on the chance to jump into the top-four.
