So they enlisted a Hollywood actor for some last-minute words of wisdom.
Richard Gere has been involved in plenty of sticky situations down through the years.
From becoming embroiled with a politician’s wife while a high-price LA male escort to falling for a pretty prostitute in the same city a little later (is there a pattern here?), he’s managed to wriggle free and put his best foot forward.
So, he was perfectly placed to dispense some advise to the Real Madrid players when he found himself, rather inexplicably, aboard the team’s private plane as they headed for Milan for Saturday’s decider.
The players seemed to enjoy the company though their reactions were a little muted.
But one person was particularly psyched by Gere’s presence: Zinedine Zidane. Look at his face! Just look at his face!
Gere has spent a considerable amount of time in Madrid recently. His Spanish girlfriend, Alejandra Silva, splits her time between the capital and New York.
The connection to Real is pretty straightforward – her father Ignacio is a former vice-president of the club.
