Simply the best! Jose Mourinho has (finally) been confirmed as Man United manager

Mou agrees three-year Old Trafford deal – with an option to stay until 2020.

MANCHESTER UNITED HAILED Jose Mourinho as “simply the best” as they officially confirmed his appointment as manager this morning.

Mourinho has signed a three-year deal, thought to be worth upwards of €40 million, with an option to stay in the Old Trafford hotseat for a further year.

“Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today,” executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said.

“He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.”

Mourinho becomes United’s third manager in as many years since Alex Ferguson retired, and replaces Louis van Gaal who was sacked on Monday following two disappointing seasons at the helm.

The Portuguese, 53, confirmed the news himself with his first-ever post on Instagram — a photo of his Man United contract:

“To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game,” he said.

It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

“I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans.

“I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”

Following three days of talks, partly held up due to outstanding issues surrounding Mourinho’s image rights from his time at Chelsea, negotiations were finally concluded on Thursday afternoon.

His first game in charge will be on 22 July when United take on Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup in China.
