Defending champions Ballina Stephenites knocked out of Mayo senior football championship

Four in a row bid comes to an end.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS BALLINA Stephenites have been knocked out of the Mayo senior club football championship.

Ballina were chasing their fourth title in a row, but a 1-17 to 1-10 defeat to Castlebar Mitchels on Friday night saw them bow out.

Having lost to Garrymore at home in their opener, the Stephenites needed to secure a result to keep their Moclair Cup hopes alive.

But with one round remaining, they cannot qualify from Group 2: Castlebar and Garrymore are on four points apiece, while Ballina and Balla have zero.

Sam Callinan was the only Ballina player to feature for Mayo in their recent All-Ireland final win over Mayo. While there was disappointment for Callinan on Friday night, there was further joy for Donnacha McHugh, Bob Tuohy and Paddy Durcan on the Castlebar side.
