MANCHESTER UNITED DEFENDER Rio Ferdinand said playing for his club is more important than playing for his country.
Ferdinand, who was controversially left out of England’s Euro 2012 squad by manager Roy Hodgson, said his main priority is helping United reclaim the Premier League title.
“To be honest I’m not really thinking about playing international football,” Ferdinand said. ”Manchester United is at the forefront of my mind.
“It’s my club, it’s what I love doing playing football for Manchester United. If anything else came of that then so be it, but I don’t think about anything else other than playing for Manchester United on a weekend and hopefully helping us win back the league.”
Ferdinand has been hampered by injuries in recent years but returned to fitness before featuring in 38 matches last season.
“I thought I managed myself really well in terms of my back injury with thanks to the physiotherapists and the science team at Manchester United. Long may that continue,” he said. ”Hopefully this season I can continue from the amount of games that I played last season which would be great.”
Ferdinand has travelled to South Africa as United begin their pre-season tour with games in Durban and Cape Town. The 33-year-old will play alongside new signing Nick Powell in the friendly matches and was full of praise for the youngster following his move from Crewe Alexandra.
“Nick is a fine young prospect. He’s got a great touch, he’s not afraid, he seems like a confident lad and he’s integrated straight into the squad,” Ferdinand said. ”For a young lad to come into an environment like Manchester United from a lower league club, you have to say that he’s come in like he’s meant to be here. And that’s a great start to any career.”
