NRL suspend player for sex-tape scandal, consorting with criminals and drug possession

Eight games seems kind of lenient for Corey Norman’s extensive rap sheet.

AUSTRALIA’S NRL HAS suspended Parramatta Eels half Corey Norman for eight weeks following his drug possession conviction and sex tape scandal.

Norman has already served a one-game suspension after being stood down from the Eels’ round 19 loss against the Penrith Panthers last Sunday.

The 25-year-old will now be unavailable for selection for the rest of the Eels’ season.

Norman was also fined 20,000 Australian dollars (€13,630).

In a statement released by the NRL, they listed Norman’s penalty as relating to the following matters:

“His conviction for drug possession at The Star casino, a police warning for consorting with known criminals at the casino, filming incidents involving apparent drug use and sexual activity, and distributing video of those incidents to other NRL players.”

“The message is clear… players cannot put themselves in a position where they may damage their own reputations and that of the game,” said NRL Head of Integrity Nick Weeks.

“We have been consistent this year in imposing strong penalties where players bring the game into disrepute through actions off the field.

“Whether it is drug possession, criminal associations or social media use, players understand the consequences that can flow from illegal or other unacceptable conduct.

“While it is a regrettable trend in society for people to look to sell footage of sports stars in their private lives there is an easy solution for our players – do not engage in activity which will damage their reputation or that of the game.”

A Parramatta statement read: “The penalty has the full support of the club and the Eels will continue to work with Corey to ensure his welfare is supported in the coming weeks.”
