GAA investigating racism claims at Ulster SFC final

Crossmaglen player Aaron Cunningham says he was the victim of abuse from members of the Kilcoo panel at the Athletic Grounds today.

THE GAA HAS revealed that it is looking into an incident at the Ulster club SFC final in which a player was allegedly the victim of racial abuse.

Armagh’s Crossmaglen defeated Kilcoo of Down by 3-09 to 1-09 at the Athletic Grounds to win a third successive title this afternoon.

However, Crossmaglen forward Aaron Cunningham claimed after the match that he had been subjected to racial abuse about his father, who is a black former inter-county player, from members of the Kilcoo panel.

In a brief statement released this evening, Ulster GAA said: The GAA is an anti-racist organisation by rule and will not tolerate in the strongest and most emphatic terms racist abuse of any type.

“Ulster GAA will investigate the matter and will deal with the alleged incident in line with the rules of the Official Guide of the GAA.”

Tonight, Kilcoo have responded to the claims.

“Kilcoo GAC is an all inclusive club which prides itself in appealing to all sections of our community, and is shocked and saddened to hear of any allegations of racial abuse following the Ulster Club Final,” their statement read.

“We as a club condemn abuse from whatever quarter and shall co-operate fully with any investigation instigated by Ulster Council.”
