Higgins still in the hunt at Q School

Waterville’s David Higgins was the only Irish hopeful to make the four-round cut at the PGA Catalunya Resort today.

DAVID HIGGINS REMAINS on course to win back his European Tour card after passing the four-round cut at the final Q School qualifier in Girona.

Higgins finished the day in a tie for 19th on five-under-par, but needs to hang on in the top 25 if he is to bag an early present ahead of his 40th birthday this weekend.

There was no repeat of the birdie-fest which saw the Waterville man power up the leaderboard in the early rounds as he shot a two-over 74 on the harder Stadium Course at the PGA Catalunya Resort.

The field was narrowed to the top 70 players and ties after play today. With two rounds to play tomorrow and Thursday, pressure to finish inside the top 25 and ties and secure the valuable Tour card for next season is fierce.

A former Irish PGA Champion, Higgins last had a full card in 2006.

Among those to miss the cut today were Dubliner Niall Kearney, who finished on five-over at the 72-hole mark, Simon Thornton on six-over and Peter O’Keeffe who could only manage a closing 76 to finish down the field on 14-over.
