Semi-final spots on the line tonight in Dr McKenna Cup

Last year’s All-Ireland football finalists Mayo are also in action tonight in the FBD league.

MICKEY HARTE’S TYRONE side only need a point from their clash with UUJ tonight to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Dr McKenna Cup.

Tyrone have won their two games to date in the competition and go into tonight’s game in Omagh in a strong position.

They should secure the top spot in Section C with Derry and Antrim, who meet in Celtic Park, still in the reckoning should the Red Hands falter.

In Section A, the winners of the meeting between Monaghan and Fermanagh in Inniskeen will be guaranteed a berth in the semi-finals with the two teams currently on four points.

A draw would suffice for Monaghan as they have a marginally better scoring difference. The other game in this group sees Donegal entertain St Mary’s in Ballybofey with both teams already out of contention.

The final match tonight is in Section B with Down meeting Armagh in Newry. Down need just a point to claim first place but an Armagh victory would leave the three teams in this group – Cavan are the other – deadlocked on two points and scoring difference would then come into play.

The best runner-up across the three sections will also qualify for the semi-final stages with Fermanagh currently in that position in Section A. The two semi-final ties are pencilled in for next Sunday afternoon, January 20th.

There is also one game in the FBD League in Connacht tonight with Mayo playing GMIT in a game that had been pencilled in for January 6th but was deferred due to the fact that Mayo were abroad in Miami on their team holiday.

Both sides lost out in their clashes last Sunday, Mayo by a single point against Leitirm while GMIT were convincingly beaten by 1-20 to 1-4 by Roscommon. Victory is essential if either side are to maintain their hopes of reaching the final of the pre-season competition.
