Dunne hoping to return to training in two weeks

The veteran Ireland and Aston Villa defender has not played since the European Championships in June.

RICHARD DUNNE HOPES to be back in training in two weeks’ time, after he underwent a successful second operation to cure his long standing groin problem.

The 33-year-old Ireland defender has not played since the European Championships but is finally hoping to get his season started, especially seeing as he is in the final year of his contract at Aston Villa.

Dunne told the Birmingham Mail: “The last operation I had seems to have really worked so I’m hopeful that I’ll be back soon. I’ve set a few targets but I keep missing them.

“It’s frustrating when I can do all the running and the rehab but not the final bit. But I’m hoping – fingers crossed – that I can start training in a couple of weeks.”

The Dubliner spoke of missing a lot of time in the last year through various injuries, and the fact that he has had a career relatively free of fitness problems up until 2012.

He added: “I’ve been lucky not to have too many injuries during my career but it’s been almost seven months where I’ve not been fit.”
