‘My mam was mortified but she is seeing the funny side of it now’ – Eamon Keegan

The Irish fan, who has gained fame in the past few days, talks about the picture the whole country has seen.

HE’S THE MAN everyone has been talking about over the past couple of days.

When Ireland fan Eamon Keegan decided to lean in and get acquainted with a Croatian fan’s breast, little did he know it would make front page news back in Ireland.

The 20-year-old UCD student from Sallins, Co Kildare, was in Poznan with several thousand other supporters for Ireland’s Euro 2012 opening game with Croatia on Sunday when the incident occurred.

“Before the game, we were all in Poznan square when two Croat girls walked by us,” he told Tom Dunne on Newstalk this morning. “So we all start chanting ‘get your t**s out for the lads!’. Next thing you know, it didn’t take much for them to oblige.

“They just seemed to be up for the craic I think!”

The now-famous picture (NSFW) quickly spread on Twitter, with the help of Ireland defender Sean St Ledger, and has been picked up by several news outlets since. And although Keegan admits it was a comical moment, he can’t believe all the coverage it has been given.

“Me and the lads can’t get our heads around the whole thing. It is a funny picture but I don’t know how it blew up so much back home. One of my friends rang me the night after the game, laughing, and told me there was picture of me trending on Twitter.

I thought he was messing and then it just clicked in my head what it was, and I thought ‘oh Jesus’. I was just hoping my ma didn’t see it.”

Not surprisingly, she did see it.

“I’ve spoken to her since. She said she’s mortified and that it was disgraceful but is seeing the funny side of it now.

“Sean St Ledger thought it was hilarious. He has tweeted me since just asking if I was sorted for match tickets and that so he seems like a top man. Pity I have them already.”

One of the Croatian fans pictured with Keegan is reportedly a civil servant, who could be sanctioned for breaking the code of conduct of public employees.

“I’d say her mother is a lot more ashamed of her,” he joked.

Keegan is currently in Poland ahead of Ireland’s second Group C meeting with holders Spain tomorrow and isn’t quite sure how he can top his antics in Poznan if Trap’s army claim an unlikely win.

“If Ireland qualify for the quarter-finals, Jesus, I don’t know what I’ll do!”

On tour: I wanna Gdansk with somebody

Uh oh, the Eamon Keegan photo has been discovered – by one of the Croatian ladies’ employers
