Sports film of the week: Fake It So Real

This week’s pick takes us inside the world of independent semi-pro wrestling and the men who put their bodies on the line for the love of the show.

Title: Fake It So Real

Plot: In a world a million miles from the glitz and glamour of the WWE, Fake It So Real tells the story of a band of independent wrestlers who stage their own make-shift shows in North Carolina.

They don’t do it for the money or the glory — the same guys putting their bodies on the line in the ring are the same guys who were setting up the small hall a few hours earlier. They do it because they love it, no matter what the cost.

What the critics said: “An engrossing documentary that lends humanity to independent pro wrestling’s savage theater of machismo.” (Ryan Lattanzio, San Francisco Chronicle)

Random YouTube comment: “Why do wrestlers smack other wrestlers across the chest like that? It seems ineffective.” (iblamesummers)
