Freeman rescues draw for Mayo in FBD League as Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo all win

There were four games in the Connacht pre-season competition today.

Section A

A LATE PENALTY by Alan Freeman helped rescue a 2-8 to 1-11 draw for Mayo against IT Sligo in the FBD League today.

The game was switched from Charlestown to the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan due to weather conditions with the throw-in delayed by half an hour. Mayo, playing their second game in three days after Friday’s win over NUI Galway, had to come from behind to grab a share of the spoils.

They had sprinted into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead in the opening period with Cathal Carolan bagging their goal. IT Sligo cut the gap to five points, 1-8 to 1-3, at the interval.

The students made the running in the second-half as they hit eight points without reply and it took the composure of Freeman to fire a penalty to the net to saw James Horan’s side. It was IT Sligo’s second successive draw after they tied with Roscommon last week.

Elsewhere in this section in Ballyforan, Roscommon were far too strong on home soil for NUI Galway as they triumphed by 2-13 to 1-5.

John Evans side lead by 0-11 to 1-0 at half-time and second-half goals by Conor Devaney and Cathal Cregg crowned victory for Roscommon.

Section B

Emlyn Mulligan hit the match-winning free for Leitrim as they beat Galway by 1-10 to 2-6 at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe.

Galway, victors over Sligo last Sunday in Tuam, were ahead by 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval with Eoin Concannon grabbing two of their points.

Leitrim got an early second-half boost with a goal from Ray Cox but Galway then hit back with goals from Ian Burke and Michael Martin to lead 2-6 to 1-8 with nine minutes remaining. But Mulligan popped up with a pair of vital late points to claim the honours for Leitrim,

Sligo were the other victors in this section by 1-8 to 0-8 against third-level outfit GMIT. The winners lead by 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time thanks to a goal from Eoin McHugh and ultimately had three points to spare at the finish.
