Graeme McDowell the latest to quit LIV Golf

‘I’ve decided not to pursue LIV 2.0. I look forward to the next chapter in my career.’

GRAEME MCDOWELL has become the latest player to quit LIV Golf as the ailing breakaway league looks to relaunch this year.

The Portrush man follows Tom McKibbin, Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia and Louis Oosthuizen in confirming that his golfing future lies elsewhere.

“I’ve decided not to pursue LIV 2.0,” McDowell wrote in a personal update on social media on Monday.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had over the last four years and want to thank everyone who has been part of that journey.

“I look forward to the next chapter in my career.”

LIV is attempting to relaunch in 2027 as LIV 2.0. with new money from BC Partners Capital after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew its support after ploughing in $5bn (€4.47bn) over four years.

In order to do that it has had to apply for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and, as a result, it has had to cancel the contracts of all its existing players, clearly in the hope that they will re-sign on new terms.

The DP World Tour has confirmed it will be taking a tougher line and that any player signing with the new-look LIV will be ineligible for membership and therefore ruled out of Ryder Cup contention.

Earlier this year, McDowell said he was considering rejoining the DP World Tour with a view to making his return to the Irish Open and, perhaps, the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.

The 2010 US Open champion joined LIV Golf in 2022.
