FIONN CARR IS leaving Leinster to return to Connacht next season.
Connacht confirmed today that the 27-year-old winger, a fan favourite during his time at the Sportsground, has agreed a two-year deal to return to the province.
Carr first joined Connacht in 2008 and proved to be an instant hit, scoring 34 tries in 73 caps to become the team’s all-time leading try scorer.
His strike rate caught Leinster’s eye and in the summer of 2011 the Newbridge College graduate moved back to his home province, but he failed to nail down in regular place in Leinster’s starting XV as they went on to defend their Heineken Cup title in 2011/2012 . Carr made 33 appearances and scored seven tries during his two seasons with Joe Schmidt’s side.
In a statement this afternoon, Connacht CEO Tom Sears promised “several key signings” will follow in the coming weeks and months. Earlier this month Connacht confirmed that former Blues boss Pat Lam will replace Eric Elwood as head coach next season.
“Everyone at Connacht is delighted to be welcoming Fionn back to the Sportsground,” Sears said. “He enjoyed huge success here in his first spell and we are confident he will hit those heights again and make a big impact next season.
“He is a proven try scorer with the ability to do something special and he will add more quality to the hugely talented back line we have.”
