Fit: Westwood 'getting on with it' for Open chase

The Englishman is nursing groin and knee injuries, but he’s not one to complain.

WORLD NUMBER THREE Lee Westwood is confident of being fit for the British Open despite suffering a groin strain in France last weekend.

Englishman Westwood slipped and tugged a muscle in wet conditions during the third round of the European Tour’s Open de France near Paris.

But the 39-year-old has no intention of missing the third major championship of the year at Royal Lytham and St Annes, starting July 19.

“It’s not the only place that it rains, England, it rains in France as well and I had a little slip last Saturday walking to the first tee and just strained my groin a little bit and hurt my knee,” Westwood told Sky Sports.

“But it seems to have worn off and I’ve played my way through it and should be okay for The Open next week.

“It’s never good to be injured, but especially when there’s something big coming up and it’s right in the middle of the season like The Open.

“It happened two years ago when I injured my leg and I couldn’t play for most of August and September and picked it up again at the Ryder Cup. So you never want injuries but occasionally silly things happen and you just have to get on with it.”

Former world number one Westwood has accumulated an impressive 39 titles during his professional career, but a major continues to elude him.

“I’m pleased with the way I’ve played this year, I’ve won a couple of times, played well at the major championships – third at the Masters and tenth at the US Open – so I keep getting myself into contention and I’m looking forward to next week and trying to get into contention there,” he said.
