Five that got away

The retirements and walk-outs continue in the world of GAA. We take a look at who we’ll miss next year.

AISAKE Ó hAILPÍN has returned to Australia with this brother, the AFL player, Setanta, it was revelaed this morning in the Irish Examiner.

Tipperary hurler Declan Fanning also announced his retirement from inter-county hurling last night.

They’re dropping like flies. TheScore.ie takes a look at five stars the GAA will have to live without next season (and four who are coming back for more):

Five that got away
1 / 9
  • Dan Shanahan

Dan the Man is more used to sharing a couch with talk shot host Brendan O'Connor than playing in front of big crowds on weekends these days. He'll be missed next year. Source: Inpho
  • Sean Óg Ó hAilpín

The former Hurler of the Year thought he was called to a meeting with Cork manager Denis Walsh to discuss mentoring the younger members of the Rebels panel. He wasn't.Source: Inpho
  • Mike McCarthy

It's the second time he's actually retired but Big Mike will be a major loss to the Kingdom next season. Source: Inpho
  • Liam Sheedy

Sheedy walked away after the Premier County's defeat of Kilkenny in the thrilling All-Ireland SHC final in September.
  • Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh

The microphone at last fell silent on the Kerryman's career after Saturday's International Rules game in Croke Park. Maith an fear.
  • Davy Fitzgerald

And here's four who are on the way back: With bete noire in the Déise dressingroom, Dan Shanahan, gone - Davy will look to rule the roost in Waterford. He's brought them close a couple of time, but can the Banner man end the county's All-Ireland glory wait?
  • Donal O'Grady

The former All-Ireland winning manager Donal O'Grady will lead Limerick - for one year only he says - in next year's league and championship action. Source: INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan
  • Brian Dooher

There was plenty of speculation that the Tyrone man would call it a day but there's no confirmation yet - no news is good news for the Red Hands supporters.
  • Conor Counihan

The Aghada man took his sweet time about making a call on his future after the win over Down in September. But he's staying on.
