IT’S BEEN A long time since people stopped treating Gavin Henson seriously as a player but every so often he does something to remind us of the talent that saw him start for two Grand Slam-winning Welsh sides.
He has actually been going quite well for Bath this season when he has played, although with Kyle Eastmond, Jonathan Joseph and Sam Burgess in the centre and Anthony Watson at fullback, Henson has been reduced to mostly cameos.
Rather than sit on the bench or in the stand and collect a check, Henson has decided to move on at the end of the season and join promotion hopefuls Bristol.
Despite bottling it in the promotion playoff last season – and inflicting London Welsh on all of us – Bristol have recruited shrewdly and look well-placed to stay up in the Premiership next season.
Henson will be joining Tom Varndell, Nicky Robinson, Matt Morgan, Dwayne Peel, David Lemi and Ian Evans as well as former Leinster duo Darren Hudson and Jack O’Connell at the club.
It is worth mentioning that since leaving the Ospreys in 2009, Henson has played for Saracens, Toulon, Cardiff, London Welsh, Bath and now Bristol. Six clubs in such a short span says it all about Henson’s lost potential.
It is almost a decade since he exploded onto the international scene with this performance against England. It took poor Matthew Tait a few years to recover.
