He's been linked with manager vacancy but Dubs yet to move for Cunningham

Speculation has linked the former Cork coach with the vacant job in the capital.

CORK HURLING LEGEND Ger Cunningham has revealed no approach has been made to him in relation to the vacant Dublin management position.

Dublin are currently searching for a new hurling supremo after Anthony Daly brought his six-year tenure to an end last week.

Cunningham has been one of several high-profile names linked to the role along with Tipperary’s Nicky English, Tommy Dunne and Liam Sheedy and Cork’s Donal Óg Cusack. Former Dublin minor manager Shay Boland and recent Dublin selector Richie Stakelum are also thought to be in the running.

At yesterday’s launch in Thurles before next Saturday’s Bord Gáis Energy All-Ireland U21 hurling finals, Cunningham confirmed that he has not been contacted by Dublin GAA chiefs as they search for a replacement for Daly.

Cunningham was involved in 2012 and 2013 with the Cork senior hurlers as the team coach alongside manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy. He departed the setup last season in the aftermath of their All-Ireland final replay loss to Clare.

Managerial Record

Previously Cunningham had senior hurling club coaching experience with his native St Finbarr’s in Cork and Waterford outfit Ballygunner. In 2009 he steered Ballygunner to the Waterford county hurling title when they beat Lismore after a replay and Cunningham then saw their hopes of Munster glory that year foiled at the final stage by Cork’s Newtownshandrum.

Recently Cunningham was confirmed as the UCC Fitzgibbon Cup coach for the coming year. He has enjoyed huge success recently in landing All-Ireland Fresher hurling titles with UCC.

For the 2015 Fitzgibbon Cup campaign, he will have players like Cork’s Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane, Clare’s Shane O’Donnell, Waterford’s Jamie Barron and Kilkenny’s John Power at his disposal.
