Power fires 64 to leap up Bermuda Championship leaderboard
BACK AT THE site of one of his PGA Tour victories, Séamus Power has charged into the reckoning at the Bermuda Championship.
The 39-year-old Waterford golfer, who won the 2022 edition but is now fighting to retain his PGA Tour card, backed up his opening 66 with a superb bogey-free 64 at Port Royal GC.
A brilliant display of putting elevated him to 12-under, which was good enough for the clubhouse lead at the end of his round.
Japan’s Kensei Hirata and American Chandler Blanchet soon bumped him down into a share of third place, taking a one-shot lead ahead of the afternoon wave.
Beginning his morning on the 10th tee, it was a steady rather than spectacular start for Power. A fine approach to the par-three 12th allowed him to drain a 19-footer for birdie.
He needed to scramble to save shots at 15 and 16, making putts from outside 12 feet for his pars.
That laid the foundation for what was to come with back-to-back birdies before the turn. A 183-yard approach over water enabled him to two-putt for birdie at 17 before another pinpoint shot left him a 10-footer at 18, which Power knocked in.
He missed a shorter opportunity at the second, but he gave himself four more chances inside 14 feet at the next four holes. Power tucked away three of them, at 3, 4, and 6.
He signed off on a high with a 116-yard approach from the rough leaving a tap-in birdie for a seven-under round.
