FAI Cup final boost for Waterford as boss Graham Coughlan signs two-year contract
FAI CUP FINAL week has got off to the best possible start for Waterford with news that manager Graham Coughlan has signed a new two-year contract.
The experienced boss has been an inspired presence at the Munster club since taking charge in early May on a short-term deal until the end of this season.
Coughlan ensured the Blues avoided relegation and also secured a place in this Sunday’s showpiece against Derry City at Aviva Stadium as he put himself firmly in the picture for the manager of the year award.
Waterford were without a win in their opening 14 Premier Division games and 10 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table when former boss Jon Daly was let go.
Coughlan masterminded a stunning turnaround, not just avoiding the drop automatically but also finishing in seventh place to stay well clear of the promotion/relegation play-off.
A run to this weekend’s FAI Cup final has added to the gloss and Waterford are also just one win away from a shot in next summer’s Europa League qualifiers.
“Football has just been, look, it’s part of my life, that’s all I know really, to be quite honest with you,” Coughlan said.
“I couldn’t have envisaged it going so well. I couldn’t have talked about walking into a better dressing room with a better group of lads. And things have probably just snowballed a little bit.
“But look, we’re not daft. We know what football’s like. We’re riding high in April, shot down in May, as they say.
“I’m going to try and enjoy it as best we can over the next couple of weeks. It’s not until the season finishes that you can probably look back and appreciate it.
“But while you’re in the middle of it, it’s kind of difficult to stop or to settle or to look back. You want to keep moving forward. So, yeah, look, it’s been brilliant.”
