One of Ireland's most promising goalkeeping talents earns promotion with Doncaster

Ian Lawlor and former Ireland U21 player Paul Keegan are both part of the Doncaster squad.

EMERGING IRISH GOALKEEPING talent Ian Lawlor enjoyed a memorable achievement with his club Doncaster Rovers yesterday, as they secured promotion back to League One.

Victory against Mansfield Town yesterday ultimately secured promotion for the table leaders who were relegated to League Two last season.

A second-half header from Tommy Rowe proved decisive in their encounter with The Stags, and puts them six points clear of second-placed Plymouth Argyle.

Lawlor, along with former Ireland U21 international Paul Keegan, are both part of the Doncaster squad, which is managed by Alex Ferguson’s son Darren.

Lawlor tweeted out his excitement at their triumph last night.

Last season ended in disaster with Doncaster relegated, as they finished their season fourth from bottom on the table.

There was disorder off the pitch as well. Manager Paul Dickov was sacked following a run of poor results. His successor Rob Jones — who took over as caretaker manager in a player-coach capacity – also stepped aside at the start of 2016.

Ferguson’s arrival brought some composure to the side as they went on to suffer just two defeats in their subsequent 10 games after his appointment.
