IRFU opt against appealing O'Driscoll ban

The Leinster centre will see out his three-week suspension for a stamp on Italy’s Simone Favaro.

THE IRFU HAVE confirmed that they will not appeal Brian O’Driscoll’s three-week suspension.

Ireland centre O’Driscoll was sin-binned for stamping on Italy’s Simone Favaro during the Six Nations defeat to Italy in Rome on March 16.

The 34-year-old was informed of the verdict after the disciplinary committee called the incident “a spontaneous act born out of frustration” but downsized the ban from the entry level of five weeks to three due to O’Driscoll’s “exemplary character”.

He will now miss Leinster’s meeting with Ulster at the RDS on Friday as well as the Amlin Challenge Cup clash against Wasps on April 5 after the IRFU said they won’t be contesting the decision.

The IRFU have confirmed that no appeal will be lodged with the Six Nations regarding the suspension of Brian O’Driscoll,” a brief statement read.

“O’Driscoll was suspended for three weeks following an incident during the RBS 6 Nations Championship game against Italy in Rome on March 16th.”
