John Allen steps down as Limerick hurling boss

The news has emerged this evening that the Cork man will not stay on in the role.

JOHN ALLEN’S REIGN as Limerick senior hurling manager has come to an end, it has emerged this evening.

Club delegates were informed at a county board meeting by Limerick GAA chiefs of Allen’s decision.

The news is a setback for Limerick hurling as the popular Cork man had been backed by county board officers, players and supporters to stay on for a third season.

There had been much speculation over Allen’s future after his two-year term of office ended when they lost to Clare in last month’s All-Ireland semi-final.

Allen and his management team had met with Limerick county board officers last Wednesday night to discuss the situation.

But Allen is now set not to be involved for a third campaign at the helm of the Limerick senior hurling side.

He departs after leading Limerick this year to their first provincial crown in 17 years with a final win over Cork in the Gaelic Grounds in July.

They had earlier overturned Tipperary in the Gaelic Grounds in the Munster semi-final but saw their Liam McCarthy Cup ambitions dashed by Clare.

Limerick will begin their 2014 season in Division 1B of the hurling league after they fell short in their efforts to gain promotion when they suffered a narrow loss in the final to Dublin.
