Kilkenny star Comerford bows out

Cats’ manager Brian Cody has to plan without O’Loughlin Gaels man who calls it a day after a glittering intercounty career.

AFTER A DIFFICULT League campaign, it’s not getting any better for Kilkenny.

Brian Cody’s panel has been depleted by the worst injury crisis of his long reign. And this morning, sharp-shooting forward Martin Comerford has announced his retirement from intercounty action.

The O’Loughlin Gaels man had been invited to join the squad for the upcoming championship by manager Brian Cody, but has opted to decline.

He told the Kilkenny People: “The time has come for me to go. I would like to thank everyone, my colleagues, team management and fans for being so good to me during my days with Kilkenny.

“I will remember them as some of the best days of my life.”

Comerford won six senior All-Irelands, nine Leinster championships and three All-Star awards (2002, 2003 and 2006) in a glittering career.
