Laois manager Fennelly resigns from post

The three-time All-Ireland winner has stepped down after only one year in charge of the team.

LAOIS HURLING MANAGER Brendan Fennelly has resigned from his job, it has been confirmed today in a statement on the county’s official website.

It is the latest in a series of setbacks for the county, who were comprehensively beaten 10-20 to 1-13 by Cork in All-Ireland SHC qualifier last month.

The team have been heavily criticised for their performances of late, with Fennelly admitting to RTÉ’s The Sunday Game: “I found a terrible lot of disillusionment in it from day one really. Players not wanting to play for their county.”

Former Laois hurler Tommy Fitzgerald then criticised his comments, saying they were “bang out of order” and placing the blame “squarely on him”.

Fennelly steps down after only one year in charge. Despite earning wins over Westmeath, Carlow, Antrim and Clare earlier in the year, the team suffered a disappointing loss to Antrim in their first Championship game.

They went on to to put in a series of below-par performances, culminating in last month’s embarrassing drubbing against Cork.
