WALES HAVE BEEN hit with another potentially huge injury blow for the World Cup, after it was revealed that Liam Williams has had surgery on a foot injury.
Williams, who can play either at fullback or on the wing, will remain in the Welsh training camp for the duration of his recovery, but the news of his surgery is sure to put question marks on his fitness for the tournament.
The 24-year-old was a key figure for Wales on the wing in the Six Nations after replacing Alex Cuthbert for the final three games, scoring a try in the 61-20 rout of Italy on the final day.
The Welsh Rugby Union have not given specific details about the injury, and aren’t speculating as to the length of his recovery.
Williams’ injury puts more strain on Warren Gatland’s side ahead of the huge challenge Pool A will provide at the World Cup, with England, Australia Fiji and Uruguay facing Wales in the pool of death.
Gatland has earlier had to deal with the withdrawal of Jonathan Davies, who ruptured his ACL playing for Clermont this month.
Wales have already begun their training camp in Cardiff and will have further training camps in Qatar, Poland, Switzerland and Spain before they kick off their tournament against Uruguay on September 20.
