THERE WAS A moment of controversy when Cologne met Augsburg in the Bundesliga over the weekend.
After conceding a penalty kick, Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz began to rake his studs around the spot right in front of the referee as Cologne’s Anthony Modeste prepared to take it.
And the underhand tactic worked as Modeste slipped to allow Hitz to make a save. If that wasn’t bad enough, Augsburg scored minutes later to claim a 1-0 win.
Swiss international Hitz was widely-criticised for his actions and later apologised on Twitter.
“I want to apologise for my actions before the penalty,” he wrote. “That was not okay and it will not occur again.”
