Matt Doherty penalty miss, Robbie Brady stunner, and Millwall goalkeeper horror tackle

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was taken to hospital after incident with Liam Roberts.

LAST UPDATE | 1 Mar

MATT DOHERTY MISSED a crucial penalty for Wolves as Bournemouth progressed through to the FA Cup quarter-finals for only the third time in their history after a rollercoaster 5-4 shoot-out win.

The fifth-round tie at Vitality Stadium was full of drama with Evanilson’s 30th-minute opener followed by VAR controversy as Milos Kerkez had a second ruled out for offside after an eight-minute check.

Matheus Cunha levelled for Wolves with a second-half stunner to force extra-time, but later lost his head in a moment of madness as referee Sam Barrott sent him off for violent conduct.

Further punishment could come Cunha’s way after he repeatedly clashed with Kerkez before penalties followed, and after Doherty missed when he had the chance to send Wolves through, Boubacar Traore hit the crossbar and it allowed Luis Sinisterra to fire Andoni Iraola’s men into the last eight

Earlier, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish branded the challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta that got Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts sent off in their fifth-round clash “the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen”.

The incident occurred early in the first half at Selhurst Park – which Palace won 3-1 – when Roberts was rushing, leg extended, to meet a through ball and kicked the Palace striker in the head.

Mateta was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after a lengthy pause, while some Millwall fans could be heard chanting “let him die”.

Parish told the BBC: “So far what we know is he’s got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury, obviously he’s at the hospital, so we hope for the best. There’s a lot of emotion in football but we need to talk about that challenge.

“In all the time I’ve watched football I haven’t ever seen a challenge like it. I looked to see how old the keeper was, he’s 30 years old. I mean that is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen.

“And I think he needs to have a long, hard look at himself that lad, because he’s endangering a fellow professional, maybe even his life, with a challenge like that.

“It’s very difficult for me to talk about the rest of the game because obviously we’re worried about JP, and it’s just a terrible, terrible challenge.

“They’re all professionals out there and they’ve got to treat each other like professionals and have a duty of care towards their fellow professional and that goalkeeper hasn’t had one.”

Parish was also critical of referee Michael Oliver, who turned to VAR after the collision before dismissing Roberts with a red card in the eighth minute.

Elsewhere, Robbie Brady scored a sensational free-kick in Preston North End’s 3-0 win at home to Burnley as they reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1996.

Fellow Republic of Ireland international Will Keane also found the net, as did Milutin Osmajic who taunted Burnley fans after his goal.

It had seemed inevitable that Osmajic should play a leading role in the drama of this all-Championship tie.

When these two sides met here in the league two weeks ago, the match ended with Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri accusing Osmajic of racially abusing him, allegations which Osmajic denies and remain the subject of an FA investigation.

Parker left Hannibal out of his matchday squad in order to protect the 22-year-old, one of nine changes to the side that thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 last week, but Paul Heckingbottom kept Osmajic in.

The issue dominated the build-up to this game, setting the tone for a tetchy encounter as Burnley players refused to shake the Montenegrin’s hand before kick-off.
