Breaffy and Castlebar Mitchels progress through to last-4 of Mayo championship

The quarter-final meeting between Knockmore and Kiltane was postponed, meanwhile.

BREAFFY BOOKED THEIR place in the semi-finals of the Mayo senior championship after a 2-12 to 0-14 win over Garrymore in MacHale Park tonight.

Breaffy trailed by four points just before the break, but a goal and point from midfielder Robbie Fadden just before the break send them in level at the turnaround on a score of 1-6 to 0-9.

Breaffy lined out with Mayo men Aidan and Seamus O’Shea in their starting line-up along with Robbie Hennelly in goal. But it was the youngest O’Shea, Conor, who scored the vital second goal midway through the second half to seal their win.

Despite playing most of the inter-county season in at full forward for Mayo, Aidan O’Shea played a sweeping role marshalling his defence and playing picking out passes into his attackers.

Breaffy also welcomed back for Mayo minor star Liam Irwin who scored the point of the day in a game filled with great scores late on to put Breaffy into a four-point lead.

Castlebar Mitchels saw off the challenge of Aghamore in the second game of the evening with a comprehensive 5-13 1-7 win over the east Mayo side.

Two first half goals form Danny Kirby who palmed to the net from close range after being picked out by Barry Moran and a one from former Mayo man Richie Feeney set the foundations for the win.

Aghamore had got off to a good start and were leading 0-3 to 0-0 after the opening ten minutes. But once Barry Moran and Aidan Walsh got to grips with the game in midfield they took complete control of the contest.

A second half goal from Robert Lyons gave Aghamore hope when it cut the gap to six points, but the same man was sent for an early bath a few minutes later after picking up a second yellow card.

Castlebar sub James Durcan got his sides third goal five minutes from time which was quickly another major from his brother Patrick.. The final goal came from hard-working wing forward Shane Hopkins in injury time to round out the win

A third quarter-final that had been down for decision on Saturday night between Knockmore and Kiltane was postponed following a death in the Knockmore area.

Defending champions Ballintubber will play Ballina Stephenites in the fourth quarter-final on Sunday afternoon.
