PETER O’MAHONY SAYS he is looking forward to this weekend’s Heineken Cup semi-final, describing how it’s “my first semi-final and probably one of my hardest”.
O’Mahony says he has been gaining some invaluable insights ahead of the game from the squad’s more experienced players:
“They wouldn’t be coaching you, but you pick up things that they do.”
Describing the game as a “huge milestone,” he claims he’s not thinking of it as an audition for the Lions.
“I don’t think so,” he said, when asked if the issue would be in the back of his mind. “That’s totally out of my hands.”
Moreover, asked about doubts concerning his fitness, the star didn’t give much away, saying that he “came through training” and acknowledged that it’s “the time of the season for bumps and bruises”.
O’Mahony also said he was more than happy with the appointment of Nigel Owens as referee for the game.
“Nigel’s a great ref. I enjoy having him as a ref – he’s full of information and a world class referee.“He’s always been very consistent.
And the Munster star is very much looking forward to the occasion, explaining: “This where we judge ourselves.”
However, he also admits the challenge is a formidable one.
“[Clermont] have a great pack and a deadly backline – maybe, a complete package.”
