Ospreys point deduction suspended

Celtic Rugby agrees that Magners League Champions were short-handed against Ulster last season and postponement was justified.

THE POINT DEDUCTION imposed on Welsh club Ospreys last season has been suspended by through a Celtic Rugby disciplinary appeal.

A four point penalty was imposed on Ospreys last season for not fulfilling their Magners League fixture with Ulster but has been suspended for two years following the appeal. Celtic Rugby agreed that Ospreys were short-handed in the front row and could not play the match as a result.

The three-man appeal committee upheld the £100,000 misconduct fine against the Magners League champions.

A statement from Celtic Rugby reads: “This rule was introduced for health and safety reasons and Celtic Rugby could not sanction a match in these circumstances. The reason for the postponement is that Ospreys are unable to supply suitably experienced front-row players in their match squad as is required under the Magners League rules and International Rugby Board rules.”
