All-Ireland Club IFC: Mulligan captains Cookstown to glory

Tyrone’s Owen Mulligan was in opposition to noted Kerry footballers Paul Galvin and Eamonn Fitzmaurice on the club stage tonight.

Cookstown 1-9
Finuge 0-6

Owen Mulligan maintained his superb All-Ireland final record tonight in Croke Park as Cookstown swept to glory in the AIB All-Ireland club IFC final against Finuge.

Mulligan was appearing in his sixth All-Ireland final, between club and county, and he maintained his perfect record in national deciders as his club triumphed by six points.

The latest success was all the more special for Mulligan as he captained the side and had the honor of hoisting the silverware on the podium in the Hogan Stand afterwards.

It was a remarkable feat by Cookstown and was their second All-Ireland IFC club title in four years after they had got the better of another Kerry outfit Spa in the 2010 decider by two points.

Their latest triumph was achieved against Kingdom opposition who had well-known figures of their own in forward Paul Galvin and Eamonn Fitzmaurice, who tomorrow afternoon will be on duty as Kerry manager in Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney for their Division 1 league tie against Dublin.

Finuge ended the game with 13 men as they saw Maurice and Pat Corridan both sent-off during the second-half. Cookstown themselves finished the game with 14 men after Barry Mulligan had to go off injured and they had used all their substitutions by that juncture.

Mulligan kicked 0-3 for his side while Jason Quinn and Marty Hughes also caught the eye up front for Cookstown. It was an evenly-contested first-half with Cookstown leading 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.

But James McGahan pounced for the crucial second-half goal which propelled Cookstown towards the finish line and former Tyrone star Raymond Mulgrew, recently returned from Australia, made a fine contribution when sprung from the bench.
