BRAZILIAN POWERLIFTER BRUNO Bruno Pinheiro Carra has been banned for nine months for failing a drugs test, the International Paralympic Committee said.
He was tested out of competition on August 24 and banned diuretics were found in his sample. The Brazilian was provisionally banned on August 31 — the day before he was due to compete at the London 2012 Games, the IPC said.
He told officials he had taken green tea capsules, which were later found to contain hydrochlorothiazide — classed as a diuretic or masking agent on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list — though hydrochlorothiazide was not listed on the product label.
“In accordance with the IPC anti-doping code, Bruno Pinheiro Carra will serve a nine-month suspension for the violation beginning on August 28, the date of notification,” a spokesman said.
“All results obtained from the date of sample collection the competition on August 24 and onwards, will be disqualified with all the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
“It is the responsibility of both the athlete and athlete support personnel to be knowledgeable of and comply with all anti-doping rules and policies,” the spokesman added.
Carra was also fined 560 euros ($706).
