IT’S A RIVALRY that goes well beyond sport and whenever the Belgrade derby takes place between Red Star and Partizan, you can be sure that plenty of tension and anxiety accompanies it.
This season, Red Star have been blistering and flawless – unbeaten in 24 league games, drawing only twice. They’ve racked up a staggering 69 goals and are 27 points clear of their nearest rivals.
Partizan, meanwhile, who won the championship last term, are floundering in sixth.
The intensity ensures it’s a real spectacle when the sides meet and the images from yesterday’s clash certainly capture that.
On the field, there was an inevitable delay just after kick-off.
Smoke from flares made it impossible to see clearly and the referee had to suspend play after just thirty seconds of action.
In the second half, the game was stopped once more for a similar reason.
Red Star went on to claim a 2-1 win, coming from behind to grab the three points.
