Flying Fiji secure first-ever Olympic medal with place in 7s final

Ben Ryan’s men were a delight to watch in their semi-final victory over Japan.

FIJI’S 7s SIDE have secured their country’s first-ever Olympic medal in any sport after advancing into the final in Rio thanks to a 20-5 semi-final victory over Japan.

Ben Ryan’s side will be going for gold in tonight’s decider [KO 11pm Irish time] against Great Britain after their tight and tense 7-5 win over South Africa in the second semi-final.

The Fijians scored four delightful tries as they outclassed surprise package Japan, who could still secure a bronze medal later today.

Ryan’s side showed all of their offloading, dynamic-running and joyous attacking talent in the semi-final win and will prove extremely difficult opposition in the final.

Fiji beat Argentina, USA and Brazil in the pool stages, before overcoming a disappointing New Zealand outfit in the quarter-finals yesterday.
