The story behind Sports Illustrated’s brilliant Red Sox cover

The Boston Police Department and MVP David Ortiz join together after the World Series win that lifted a city.

WHEN KOJI UEHARA threw the final pitch in Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox didn’t just clinch baseball’s World Series and cap a remarkable turnaround that saw them go from last place to champions.

They lifted an entire city six months on from April’s devastating marathon bombings.

The Red Sox’s resurgence and Boston’s recovery go hand-in-hand and this week, Sports Illustrated’s cover combines the two perfectly.

Under the headline ‘Boston’s finest hour,’ the cover shows police officers Rachel McGuire, Javier Pagan and Detective Kevin McGill standing alongside World Series MVP David Ortiz in Fenway.

McGuire, Pagan and McGill were the officers in this iconic photo, taken just seconds after the explosions near the finish line at Boylston Street.

On and off the field Ortiz, who has been a Red Sox player since 2003, became the figurehead in a remarkable season, no more so than in the aftermath of the bombings when he took the microphone and told Boston: “This is our fucking city.”
